About RIPL

RIPL is a non-profit tech for social impact organization founded in 2018. We help government solve some of society’s most pressing challenges using data and science. Our work has supported data-driven policy improvements in health care, education, social insurance, civic participation, workforce development, and criminal justice.

In the early days of COVID-19, we partnered with Rhode Island to build a cloud-based Pandemic Unemployment Assistance system in just 10 days, making Rhode Island the first state in the nation to pay CARES act benefits to workers and families in need, and helping over 70,000 RI workers receive their unemployment benefits.

The Role

We need your data engineering expertise for an innovative, data-driven ML/AI solution that helps unemployed and displaced workers across the country discover new careers and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic!

This is an opportunity to work with and craft one-of-a-kind data sets from government administrative records to improve public policy at scale. You will join a dynamic and cross-functional team of technology experts, policy leaders, and academic scientists from top research universities who believe in the power of data to make government work smarter and better for those in need.

The Ideal Candidate

Our ideal Senior Data Engineer candidate has the following qualifications, experience, and skills:

  • Either an advanced degree (e.g., M.S., Ph.D., M.B.A., J.D., M.D.) or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years work experience with organizing, cleaning, visualizing, and understanding big data.
  • Strong software engineering skills as demonstrated by developing and launching product features and advancing within a company’s engineering ladder.
  • Expertise with a programming or data analysis language (e.g., Python, R, Stata) and relational databases (e.g., SQL). Expertise with cloud computing, web technologies, and distributed systems (e.g., Spark) is a plus.
  • A strong desire and commitment to use data and science to solve complex social problems at speed and at scale.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision as demonstrated by being a self-started, exceptionally organized and able to communicate project progress via online project and task management software (RIPL currently uses JIRA).
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team and communicating strategy and project goals to non-technical stakeholders. Previous projects with government policy makers or academic scientists are a plus.
